Pulau Ubin

Today we escaped Singapore’s main island and took a boat to Pulau Ubin, a small island covered in mangroves and forest which is still pretty undeveloped and full of birds, butterflies and other more bizarre wildlife.

The boat leaves when there are 12 people waiting (precisely 12, no more and no less). On the island you hire bikes and go exploring. The ladies’ bikes are for pocket-sized Chinese girls – you can lift up the seat but the handlebars don’t move which leaves you at a curious angle.

It was really nice to get out of the concrete world of Singapore proper, and on one of many rest breaks we discovered a real-life evolutionary missing link – fish that walk out of the water on their fins with their gills full of water for oxygen – very weird. We finished off with a huge lunch of fish, prawns and a giant chilli crab. Top quality afternoon.
