Perched Headgear

Singapore is a nation obsessed with shopping as I think is well documented. In fact I illustrated when doing a walking tour of the city with my folks last weekend: every time I pointed at a building I was found to say the words, “and there’s a mall in there as well.”

The fashonista-stylings of Singapore’s mall rats often throw up a curious seasonal clothing trend. How there can be anything to wear apart from t-shirts, flip-flops and shorts in the equatorial heat I’ll never understand. But attempt a new trend they must to protect a economy driven by consumption…

Baseball caps. Worn balanced on the tops of their heads.

Yes, the latest trend for the shuffling youth of Singapore is to eschew the space within a baseball cap specifically designed to be filled with head and slowly wander around with the cap balanced atop a suitably lustrous hed of hair. Although I am a little jealous of the hair.

I’m not sure where this has come from, although from the clothing it appears to be a hip-hop thing, but last time I checked 50 Cent was still rocking the ‘bandana with off-centre NY cap’ rather than the ‘oh crap I’m about to lose my headwear to a freak gust of wind’ look.

It’s possible it’s a misinterpretation in a bid by the individuals concerned to stretch themselves taller using some kind of optical illusion. It does seem to be the more rotund of Singapore’s male youth who’ve adopted this posturing. But there has been equal opportunity offending against good millinery by members of both sexes, large and small alike.

I’ve taken to walking past and coughing a loud “HAT” in an attempt to amuse myself and anyone else with eyes who can see the balancing berk.

Alternatively it could be that, as I approach my thirties, I’m just too old to know what’s cool anymore.

But they do look like total pillocks.
